The 3D Imaging Center and the Natural History Museum of Denmark (NHMD) have been awarded 10 million DKK from the Augustinus Foundation for their innovative ‘NaturArv3D’ project. Over the next three years, this pilot project will develop a groundbreaking X-ray CT scanner infrastructure for large-scale 3D digitisation of the vertebrate collection at the museum. Using a robotic system, the intention is that 500 artefacts can be scanned in a week.
The resolution will be excellent: below 10 µm. The digitization and logistics will be coordinated by DaSSCo, the Danish System of Scientific Collections infrastructure. This will transform how researchers can study collections - providing unique opportunities for evolutionary biology and climate research - and how the public can experience natural history through 3D animations and prints in exhibitions.
