Lizard Study at DanMAX

Lizard Skin Reveals Enamel-Like Material

A new study using advanced imaging at the DanMAX beamline, located at the MAX IV synchrotron in Sweden, has uncovered a remarkable material in the skin of the Mexican bearded lizard (Heloderma horridum). The lizard’s bony skin plates, called osteoderms, are topped with a capping tissue that is as stiff and hard as enamel, yet structurally very different.
